Note:
This list of deeds was prepared by Wes Patterson in advance of a trip to Asheville,
NC (Buncombe Co) using the book called Index to Buncombe Co NC Deeds.
This book is not without error in that there were some duplicates, and also
there were some transcription errors found, such as Reuben Black selling 870 acres to John Patterson, when it was really 170 acres. BIG DIFFERENCE! Also, that book does not list witnesses to the deeds, and the descriptions
are very vague. I spent 4 hours looking up about 75 of these deeds at the county
register of deeds in Asheville, and was encouraged at the level of detail I
was able to find (and add) to this list. I tried to add better descriptions
of the creeks and rivers and the lines and corners of the tract boundaries in
order to show proximity to neighbors, etc. I also transcribed the witnesses,
if any were listed. Sometimes there were one, two, or even three, and other
times there weren't any.
The reason for searching the deeds of the individuals below was for the express purpose of finding more clues regarding the PATTERSON and BLACK families of Buncombe Co., NC. The 1810 census of Buncombe was preserved in the "visitation" order which allows us to see geographical relationships with relative accuracy. This can only help in trying to uncover kinships in certain families over a period of time. That's why I chose the families who lived near John Patterson in 1810 in Buncombe Co., NC. I looked for deeds from the 1790s to about 1830 or so, but there were many more deeds involving some of these individuals that I did NOT lookup, such as the Freemans and Davises, etc. In that case, I just focused on the deeds that had a reference to the French Broad River, Sandy Mush Creek, Newfound Creek, Jenkins Branch, and Turkey Creek. This area is just to the northwest of Asheville, NC which is modern day Buncombe Co NC.
Next I have included a listing of the families from page 248 of that census. Deeds of other families are included because of KNOWN kinships and PRESUMED kinships, such as the families from York Co., SC, eg. PONDER, HARRISON, SANDLIN, and others. I was definitely pleased to find that this approach bore positive results as I found Pattersons and Blacks listed as witnesses on deeds of these other families, as well as neighbors to the tract descriptions of these other families. This approach has paid off in ways that wasn't fully expecting.

Notes: (names
in bold below are in this census listing above from 1810 Buncombe)
Reuben Black was born 1769-1771 near Gaffney,
SC. This is another family from York Co SC, although during the 1750s-1780s
that area was known by many different names, from Craven Co SC, to Anson, Mecklenburg,
and Tryon Counties NC, to York Co SC. Roger Ford has been involved in a lot
of research regarding these Blacks of York Co SC and Buncombe Co NC as he descends
from this Reuben Black. He also descends from the Harrisons of that era and
location. Reuben Black moved to Cocke Co TN in the late 1820s, where he died
sometime after 1860. It has not yet been proved who Reuben's father was, but
he was in Burke Co NC in 1800, but not as a head of household, though. There
was a Matthew Black 3-1-2-0-1 and 0-1-2-0-1 in Burke in 1800 and a Robert Black
also who appeared to be a son of Matthew as his household was 1-0-0-1-0 and
0-0-1-0-0. It appears that Reuben had a younger brother named Joseph, so Reuben
and Joseph Black may have been the "2" in Matthew's household in
1800 in the 16-25 age bracket (Reuben was actually a little older than that,
but that doesn't rule this out). Many of these Blacks of Burke Co later came to Buncombe.
The Matthew Black that was in Burke Co NC in 1800 appears to have been from York Co SC originally. Here in 1810 Reuben (son of Matthew of Burke) is living next to Joseph Patterson. The Matthew Black of Burke Co NC was born about 1750 or earlier. I previously thought he couldn't have been the father of Margaret Black Patterson who was born ca. 1767, but now I'm not so sure. There was a Matthew Black who married a Margaret Ponder in Augusta Co Va on 7 January 1762, and this may have been the same Matthew, or perhaps an uncle of the Matthew of Burke. More research needs to be done to clear this up.
There were 4 PATTERSON households listed on this page in Buncombe in 1810. There were other Pattersons in the county that year, but they don't seem to be as closely related to this group, if at all. I (Wes Patterson) am the gggg-grandson of the John Patterson listed here. John was born ca. 1765 in SC. Enough credible evidence has come to light in recent years to convince me 100% that this John Patterson was the son of Thomas Patterson of York Co SC, who in turn was the son of Robert "R" Patterson who died in York Co SC in 1775 (his will was signed by James Dickey and Nathaniel Harrison). Some have said this older Robert Patterson of York died ca. 1790, but it has been proven that his widow died in 1790 and that's when Robert's will was entered into the court record, but he actually died in 1775 based on several facts that I won't bother to go into here.
Another comment about John Patterson listed here in 1810 Buncombe. I and others have seen several times on the Internet that some people list John's parents as John and Elizabeth Patterson. I have never been able to find any credible evidence to support that, and no one who claims it has been able to show me any evidence. Be careful with anything you find on the Internet. And that goes for anything that I put out there, too. We all need to check the sources for our selves to be certain about these things.
That's why I made this trip to Buncombe to find more evidence linking the York Co SC families to my John Patterson. This John Patterson of 1810 Buncombe was born ca. 1765 in SC, and I believe in York Co SC. Many people used to say that he was in Pendleton District, SC in 1790, but Marty Grant has proposed a very credible theory that this was not the case. I agree with Marty and no longer believe John was in Pendleton District, SC - EVER. John married Margaret "Peggy" BLACK, ca. 1786-88. I currently believe they may have been living in Lancaster Co, Camden District, SC in 1790. What we do know is their son Joseph B. Patterson was born in 1789 in SC, shown above on the 1810 Buncombe census.
John & Margaret (J&M) were in Buncombe by the mid 1790s and showed up on the census there in 1800 (next to Thomas Patterson on the "P" page) and again in 1810. They were in Haywood Co NC in 1820. This Joseph Patterson listed here in 1810 was their oldest son. His name was Joseph B. Patterson, and I've always believed the "B" stood for Black. I used to believe that the Robert Patterson and James Patterson listed here in 1810 were younger brothers of John. I do still believe that this Robert Patterson was a younger brother of John, but the James Patterson appears to have been a cousin of John, perhaps the son of James of 1800 Buncombe, or more likely the son of Peter Patterson. As of 2010, I lean more toward the theory that Peter Patterson's kids were moving into Buncombe just prior to 1810, with James being one of his sons.
The question has been raised by Roger Ford as to whether or not Margaret Black Patterson was the sister of his Reuben Black. I think it's more likely that Reuben's father Matthew Black was a 1st cousin or an uncle of Margaret Black Patterson. J&M's daughter Amey Jane Patterson was born ca. 1793 and she passed down to her descendants that the family was from Camden District, York Co., SC. Another note regarding Margaret Black; her sister was named Susannah Black, born in the early 1760s in York Co SC. She married James Kincaid who shows up on the records of York Co SC also. They eventually made it up to Buncombe Co NC as well.
The Robert Patterson listed here was in Buncombe in 1800 and 1810, and then in Haywood Co NC in 1820, which was the same pattern as John Patterson and his son Joseph B. Patterson. The James Patterson listed here was in Haywood Co NC in 1820, and then in Cherokee Co NC in 1830 and 1840. He moved to Gilmer Co GA by 1850 where he died that same year. He was married to Sarah Morrow / Marr.
This James Patterson was very involved in the Buncombe deeds with John and Robert Patterson as you can see in the deed records below. James also bought the land that had Thomas Patterson's improvement on it, from Caty Roberts in 1812, Caty having moved to Jefferson Co TN by then. According to one deed there was also an Andrew Patterson who was a witness on the 1802 purchase of land by John Patterson from Richard Morrow.
It seems likely to me this Andrew Patterson (and the younger John Patterson who witnessed an 1808 deed for John Patterson Sr.), were most likely younger brothers of James Patterson. I believe this Robert Patterson of Buncombe 1810 and Haywood 1820 died in Rabun Co Ga between 1820 and 1822 according to court records there, and the relationship of that Robert to a Joseph Patterson. Notice that they (uncle and nephew) are living four households from each other here in Buncombe in 1810! And Joseph B. Patterson DID move into Rabun Co Ga in the early 1820's and was enumerated on that county's 1830 census.
Also take note of the many deed references below regarding Daniel Ponder and the Pattersons. Daniel Ponder married the daughter of Robert Patterson of York Co SC who died in 1775. That makes Daniel Ponder the brother-in-law of Thomas Patterson of York, and uncle of this John and Robert Patterson here in Buncombe in 1810. It's also important to note that this same Daniel Ponder was connected to Thomas Patterson and others from York Co SC on the deeds there. One such deed was in 1786 when Thomas Patterson sold his 60 acres in York Co SC to his younger brother Robert Patterson Jr of York. See the following:
B-277. 20 March 1786
Thomas Patterson of York County, to Robert Patterson of same for 35 pounds, 60 acres in York County on both sides of Clarks fork of Bullocks Creek, a survey of land granted to Thomas by patent dated 22 April 1767, adjoining Harrisons old line, Blacks old line. Signed Thomas Patterson. Witnesses: Peter Patterson, Benjamin White, Daniel Ponder. Proved: 20 --- 1790 by Peter Patterson. (WP: This Thomas was the father of John Patterson of Buncombe in 1810, and Peter and Robert Patterson and Daniel Ponder were all uncles of John Patterson. I'm not yet sure who the Benjamin White was.)?-??? 29 September 1813
Daniel Ponder of Buncombe County, North Carolina to Peter Galloway of York County, South Carolina for $1000.00, two different surveys both sides of Clark's Fork of Bullock's Creek, 100 acres granted to Edward Moorhead and conveyed from him to Ponder & part of a survey granted to Robert Patterson and conveyed from him to Thomas Patterson and from him to Daniel Ponder; 70 acres beginning at Peter Patterson's station on the crop trally? running thence n 23 back to the old line halfway to the corner thence straight across the paid land into the middle of the line between Peter Pattersons's corner and the upper corner of the said land thence down the said land to Peter Pattersons's corner thence along said Patterson's line to beginning. Signed: Elizabeth Ponder (X) & Daniel Ponder. (WP: This was Elizabeth Patterson Ponder, sister of Thomas Patterson) Witnesses: John Wallace, Samuel Galloway & John Patterson. Elizabeth Ponder, wife of said Daniel Ponder relinquishes dower. (WP: The fact that Daniel Ponder was in Buncombe Co NC and involved with many deeds with John Patterson of Buncombe during those years, I would find it hard to believe that this wasn't the same John Patterson of Buncombe acting as a witness for Daniel Ponder here.)
Another deed that ties Daniel Ponder to the John and Margaret Black Patterson family is one from York Co SC in 1787 involving a John Swann deed where James Kincaid and Daniel Ponder were the witnesses. We know that I'm declaring Daniel Ponder as John Patterson's uncle, but James Kincaid WAS a brother-in-law of John and Margaret Black Patterson. Margaret's sister Susannah Black married James Kincaid in York Co SC. Here is that deed:
D-454 30 August 1787
John Swann, son and heir to Robert Swann, deceased of Camden District to Wilkinson Turner, 200 acres on both sides of Bell's branch of King's Creek being a tract of land granted to Robert Swann, deceased. Witnesses: James Donnelly, James Kinkead & Daniel Ponder. Proved by James Donnelly 1 March 1789. [Note by Patricia Saupe: Daniel Ponder's sister, Mary Polly Ponder married Nicholas Seahorn/Seehorn and their daughter Catherine b. 30 November 1770, married Samuel Swann 1790 York County, South Carolina. Further note by Deanna Ames: the Samuel Swann who married Catherine Seahorn was the brother of the above mentioned John Swann].
The following York Co SC deed regarding Daniel Ponder shows him associated with his brother-in-law Peter Patterson (brother of Thomas) and also with Buncombe Co NC.
G-527 22 January 1798
William and Robert Love of York County to Peter Patterson, Sr. of York County, 212 acres, which is on both sides of ----------- branch of Clarks fork of Bullock Creek. The land was granted to Robert Love, deceased, on the 18 October 1792. Witnesses: Daniel Ponder, Elenor (x) Henry. Proved 10 October 1815. Malcolm Holcomb J.P. of Buncombe County, North Carolina.
There are many more deeds involving Daniel Ponder and at least three of his sons, but these that I've listed are the main ones that show the proof of his ties to the John Patterson family, but even more so shows the ties between John Patterson of Buncombe and the Pattersons and Blacks of York Co SC (sometimes documented as Mecklenberg Co or Tryon Co NC or Craven Co SC or Camden District SC or York Co SC; in each case though, the key is that the land described on the deeds has something to do with "Clark's Fork of Bullocks Creek" and that is in modern day York Co SC).
Clem Davis was the son of Harmon and Pheobe Davis of Newberry District, SC. Clem was born 3-27-1755 in Newberry Co SC and died 10-29-1838 in Buncombe Co NC. He married Elizabeth Plemons/Fleming on 8-15-1785 in Lincoln Co NC. They were in Burke Co NC in 1800, as were Matthew Black and one Robert Black, most likely the son of Matthew Black.
Reason Davis was a son of Clem (Clement) Davis.
Joseph Harrison was a son of Nathaniel and Rachel Harrison of York Co SC. The elder Nathaniel Harrison died ca. 1783-84 in York Co SC. He had signed the will of Robert Patterson of York in 1775. That Robert Patterson was the grandfather of John Patterson on this census page. As for Rachel Harrison, she (and her son Joseph listed here) sold their York Co SC land (140 acres on both sides of Clarks Fork of Bullocks Creek) to Matthew Black, dated July 29, 1785. We now know that this 140 acre tract of Nathaniel Harrison of York was adjoining to the 60 acre tract of Thomas Patterson! At that time (1785), Rachel and son Joseph Harrison were living in Rutherford Co NC. This Joseph Harrison died in Buncombe Co NC in 1811. He had 3 sons and 4 daughters, two of which were Nathaniel and Jane Harrison. They are the ones noted in the Buncombe deeds below. As for the Thomas Harrison in the deeds below, he may have been an uncle or even a brother of this 1810 Joseph Harrison. Thomas was in Buncombe in 1800, while Joseph was in Rutherford. We also now believe that Thomas Patterson married a Margaret Harrison. Was she a sister of this Thomas Harrison? We just don't know yet.
Betty Hulse has done extensive research on these Harrisons and has helped keep me straight on the many errors that have been published about this Joseph Harrison family. His wife was Margaret Hill, by the way. As for the York Co SC ties, Joseph's father Nathaniel Harrison had his 140 acres on both sides Clarks Fork of Bullocks Creek surveyed on 8-28-1765 by W Sims. This was along "Blacks line". The chain bearers (CB) were Thomas Harrison and Robert Black. This Robert Black was the husband of Maggie Cravens Black who most likely was a 1st cousin of Nathaniel and Thomas Harrison. A neighbor of Robert Black and Nathaniel Harrison of York Co SC was Thomas Patterson, son of Robert Patterson (1775 will). Thomas Patterson's 60 acres on both sides of Clarks Fork of Bullocks Creek had been surveyed and later issued to him on 4-22-1767, and it was adjacent to Robert Blacks and Nathaniel Harrisons lands. This Thomas Patterson was the father of a John Patterson, I believe to be one and the same as the John listed here in the 1810 Buncombe census. Thomas and John Patterson were next to each other in the 1800 Buncombe census. We now know that the "Blacks line" referred to in Nathaniel Harrison's grant to be Matthew Black.
As for Thomas Harrison, uncle of this 1810 Joseph Harrison, he was chain bearer (along with Robert Black) for Matthew Black's survey in York Co SC on 8-29-1765. This was 100 acres on both sides Clarks Fork of Bullocks Creek. As mentioned earlier, the Blacks of Burke Co NC and later Buncombe Co were from this Robert and Matthew Black of York Co SC. This same Thomas Harrison was also a chain bearer with John Countryman for Robert Swann's survey York Co SC on Bullocks Creek in 1766. There were Swan(n)s who came to Buncombe also, and some Countryman descendants were in Buncombe as well. Joseph Harrison seems to be mentioned one time in York Co SC as a chain bearer. Since this Joseph Harrison here in 1810 was born in 1735 (or was it 1762?), he appears to be the same person. He was a CB along with James Chamberlain for a Robert Swann survey in 1771 along Floyds and Golds branch of Clarks Fork of Bullocks Creek...McKennys line...Joseph Clarks line... Again, this Joseph Harrison died in 1811 in Buncombe Co NC. His widow, Margaret Hill Harrison, died in 1842. Many of their descendants were in Buncombe and also some settled later in Campbell Co., Ga.
The Plemings are an interesting group. You will see their name spelled many different ways, including Plemons, Plemmons, Plimons, Fleming, Flemming, Pleming, etc. The Plemings were out of Va originally, and this group was definitely in Lincoln Co NC in the 1780s and 90s as part of the Peter Plimons family. They were in Burke Co NC in 1800, or at least some of them were. There were other Flemmings in York Co SC, such as John and Robert, but I haven't had the time to find out if they were close kin to these Buncombe Plemings or not. I believe they were, but they may not be the same individuals, though. I believe the John Pleming at the top next to the Hawkins and Freemans was a son of the John Pleming next to James Patterson. There was a Daniel Pleming in Buncombe around this 1810 timeframe, and there was one by the same name living next to John Patterson in 1790 Lancaster Co SC.
Isaac Miles was the father of Levi Miles who was a witness to a deed mentioned below (#74) where Daniel Black was selling land to Mathew Black (the land that included Thomas Patterson's improvement). Isaac Miles died in 1835 in Buncombe Co NC. His wife was Sarah Doe (Miles). She died in 1850-51 in Union Co Ga (many of these families migrated to north Ga in the 1820s and 30s). Their son Levi Miles was born in 1787 in Va, married Sarah Matilda Poole in Buncombe Co NC about 1819, and he died in 1880 in Buncombe Co NC.
David Tumlinson was part of a large family out of SC. Their last name has been spelled about 700 different ways - that's a joke, by the way. Some spellings are Tumbleson, Tumblinson, Tumlinson, Tomlinson, etc., etc. David's father was named John Tumlinson, born 1755 in SC, who married Martha White, and both John and Martha died in Crawford Co., AR in 1826 and 1830, respectively. John Tumlinson had brothers named Nathaniel and Richard Tumlinson. David (son of John and Martha) had at least 4 siblings named Joseph, Peter, John Jackson, and James Stephen - all Tumlinsons, of course. John Jackson Tumlinson was born in 1776 in Lincoln Co NC. His wife was Lara Elizabeth Plemmons. She appears to be the sister of the John Pleming who was living next to David Tumlinson here in 1810.
Henry Wood was living next to John Patterson here in 1810. He was born 1767-1770 in the Scotts Creek area of the old Buncombe Co. He died about 1840 in Haywood Co NC. He was the son of James and Margaret Wood, both of whom were born ca. 1750. Henry Wood married Agnes York about 1790 and they had several chidren together before she died in 1810-1811. About 1812, just two years after this 1810 census, Henry remarried, this time to Margaret "Peggy" Bryson. Peggy was born on 4-14-1782 in the 96th District of SC. They married about 1812, in Haywood Co NC. Peggy was the daughter of James Holmes Bryson and Sarah Countryman (Bryson). They were married about 1767 in 96th District, SC. Sarah Countryman was the sister of John and Andrew Countryman of York Co SC. Both brothers were involved in a few deeds in York Co SC in the 1760s that were also connected with Robert Swann and Bullocks Creek. As mentioned earlier, John Countryman was a CB with Thomas Harrison on a Robert Swann deed in York Co SC in 1766. Marty Grant is another researcher who is a descendant of these Brysons and he has quite a bit of information on them on his web site at http://www.martygrant.com/gen/bryson.htm.
Ezekiel Sandlin was born in York Co SC in 1782. His parents were William Sandland/Sandlin and Massey Green (Sandlin). The Sandlins were from the Kings Creek part of York Co SC. Ezekiel's wife was named Martha, and they were married about 1800. Many of the Sandlins moved to Clay Co KY. Some descendants of Ezekiel and Martha Sandlin say her maiden name was Patterson. They had a son named Robert Patterson Sandlin. It is very possible she was another daughter of Peter Patterson.
