James Patterson was born ca 1784 in York Co SC. Overwhelming evidence points to him being a son of Peter Patterson. Peter died soon after 1800 in York Co SC, and many (if not all) of his children moved to Buncombe Co NC where Thomas Patterson (brother of Peter) and his sons and their families had been living since the 1790's. For the next decade (until about 1815) James and his siblings lived next to John and Margaret Black Patterson. It has not been proven yet, but this writer believes John and Margaret were 1st cousins in addition to being spouses. John was the son of Thomas. Margaret "Peggy" Black most likely was the daughter of Joseph and Sarah Patterson Black. Thomas and Sarah Patterson were siblings, as was Peter. Therefore, if all of this proves to be true, then John, Margaret, and James were all three 1st cousins to each other.

James Patterson married Sarah Morrow in 1810 in Buncombe Co NC. By 1815 they moved to Haywood Co NC. Later, they lived in Cherokee Co NC and then settled lastly in Gilmer Co Ga, where James died in 1850.
