John Joseph Patterson was the second child of Amos Patterson and Elizabeth Wilson. He was born between 1831 and 1834, depending on which census record you go by. He was born in GA, most likely in the Union Co area. The 1900 Montague Co Tx Census states he was born in January, 1831. John was most often recorded as John J. Patterson, but on occasion as J.J. Patterson.
On November 15, 1866 John J. married Sarah "Sally" A. Holmes in Rusk Co TX. John and Sally had three children prior to Sally's death in February, 1874. She died in Rusk Co TX.
John was living with his father and step-mother in Rusk Co TX in 1860. He was listed in Buenavista, Precinct 5, Shelby Co., Tx in 1870. In 1880 he was recorded in Precinct 1, Montague Co., Tx. He was still in Montague in 1900. One descendant of John J. Patterson wrote in her personal notes before she died that she believed John J. died in the Texhoma, OK area between 1910 and 1912. More research needs to be done to confirm this.
Margaret Costanza Wickes, a descendant of John J., states that he was "...a land agent for Hesikial Land Co. which handled land sales in and around Montague Co Tx when that town was young and booming (1880 and later)." Margaret has filled in so many of the details of John J. and his descendants. I am forever grateful to her for sending this information to me.
During the Civil War, almost all of the Pattersons in TX and GA enlisted. John J. Patterson served in the 14th Texas Cavalry, which was Colonel Middleton Tate Johnson's 1st Regiment. Johnson had 5 regiments, which were the 14th-18th Texas Cavalry regiments. Also in the 14th TX Cavalry was John J.'s brother Wilson Lumpkin Patterson, as well as their 1st cousins, Middleton Tate Patterson, Robert L. Patterson, and Berryman Cicero Patterson. These 1st cousins were sons of Robert Patterson and Ann Johnson (Patterson). Their uncle was Colonel Johnson.
As mentioned earlier, John J. married Sally Holmes in 1866. Their oldest child was R. Elizabeth Patterson, born ca. 1869 in Henderson, TX (Rusk Co). She married J. D. White on October 16, 1892 in Montague Co, TX. They had two children, Elva White and Admiral White.
John and Sally's second child was Amos Holmes Patterson, born April 08, 1871 in Henderson. He married Fanny Mae Roberts on August 22, 1905 in Montague Co, TX. Amos H. Patterson served in the Spanish-American War as a "2nd Musician, Band, 3rd Texas Infantry, (data from Bureau of Pensions) in Co A". Margaret Wickes descends from Amos H. and has supplied much information on him and his family. More will be added here later. Amos H. Patterson died on August 11, 1928 in Belen, NM. His widow Fanny died on December 22, 1967 in Albuquerque, NM. Amos and Fanny had 12 children.
John and Sally's third and youngest child was N. Caroline Patterson, born Abt. May 1873 in TX, presumabely Henderson. Nothing further is known of her at this time.
If anyone has any further information about John J. Patterson and his descendants, I would certainly appreciate being informed. Thank you.
