John Patterson, Jr. was born about 1798 in Buncombe Co., North Carolina. He was the second son of John and Margaret Black Patterson. On February 8, 1823 John married Sarah "Sallie" Hicks (Hix) in Haywood Co., NC. Sallie was born in 1803 in Spartanburg Co., SC. Sallie's parents were David and Ellender Furnett Hicks. Sallie had a sister named Lucinda who was about a year younger than Sallie. Lucinda lived with John and Sallie Patterson for the remainder of her life and never married. You will find an extra female on many of the census records for this family. It was always Lucinda Hicks (Hix), Sallie's sister.

John and Sallie had at least nine children. I haven't seen too many people list a second daughter that apparently was born around 1829 or so (was listed on the 1830 Rabun Co., Ga census), but died before 1834 (was no longer with the family on the 1834 Union Co., Ga census). John Patterson, Jr. died on April 8, 1854 in Fannin Co., Ga. Sallie Hicks Patterson died before 1870, in Fannin Co., Ga.
