Peter Patterson was born in the late 1740's. He was born in Augusta Co Va in the Linville Creek area west of modern day Harrisonburg (Rockingham Co). By the late 1750's or early 1760's his parents and family moved south to the Carolinas along Clark's Fork of Bullocks Creek. This is in modern day York Co SC.

Not much is known of Peter Patterson's family, in terms of names. However, we can determine that he was married at least once and had at least seven children, and probably eight - four sons and four daughters. Peter was recorded many times on deeds, and he was also one of the two executors of his father's 1775 Will.

In 1790, York Co SC court records tell us that James Patterson died, and Peter Patterson and John Patterson were granted rights of administration of his estate. I used to think these were sons of Peter, but no longer. It seems that James and John may have been sons of Thomas. In 1790, Thomas no longer lived in York Co SC, thus the reason for Peter's involvement.

Based on the 1790 and 1800 census we can roughly piece together the following notes about the children of Peter Patterson, at least the numbers of males and females and their approximate age. Further research involving records in Buncombe, Haywood, Macon and Cherokee counties (NC), as well as records in north Ga, Ohio, Iowa, etc, have given us many clues to piece this family together.

Peter appears to have had the following children.
  1. ?Andrew (b. 1772/74; d. aft 1802);
  2. ?Abigail (b. 1775/80; d. aft 1797);
  3. Martha (b. 1782/84; d. ____); m. Ezekiel Sandlin
  4. James (b. ca 1784; d. 1850); m. Sarah Morrow (aka Marr)
  5. John Marion (b. 1785/86; d. 1824); m. Cassander "Cassay" Pence
  6. Jane (b. ca 1789; d. ca 1852); m. James Freeman
  7. Elizabeth (b. 1790/91; d. aft 1850); m. James Morrow
  8. Peter (b. ca 1794; d. aft 1850);

I used to think Elizabeth (b ca 1790/91) was a daughter of John and Margaret Black Patterson since her family (James Morrow) followed John all the way to Union Co Ga in the 1840s and 50s. However, their oldest son was Peter Patterson Morrow (b 1810/11). That and other evidence seems more likely to indicate she was a daughter of Peter.

Jane Patterson married James Freeman. Their oldest daughter was Abigail Freeman, and their oldest son was Peter Patterson Freeman.

Martha married Ezekiel Sandlin, and one of their sons was named Robert Patterson Sandlin.
